The pub acquired its name from George Purefoy Jervoise of Herriard Park, one of a group of landowners of Preston (Preston Candover) in the early 19th Century. Significant changes in landownersip during the mid 19th century led to a great deal of land and property being swept away inlcuding the New Inn. The pub was rebuilt in the 1860’s and was named the Purefoy Arms.
